Burning Professional Bridges
Thinking back, I’ve probably burned about two bridges in my career as a freelance writer. In both instances I was contracted to complete projects for difficult individuals who didn’t understand the meaning of “personal life.” This was in the past, and I don’t regret my decision to bail on the projects. I’ve said this before…my sanity is worth more than any paycheck.
It wasn’t my most professional moment, but I learned from the experience and resolved to never burn another bridge.
But burning bridges involves more than skipping out on a project or putting a client in his/her place. Speaking badly about clients online can tarnish their reputation, and other telecommuters may be reluctant to provide their services. And since remarks written on blogs or other social media outlets can live on in cyberspace, it’s possible for clients to Google their name or company and stumble upon your negative statements.
Freelance Writing Gigs section on Business Tips for Writers recently highlighted five reasons not to burn bridges. Although the information’s written for freelance writers, these are tips to live by, and every telecommuter can apply the advice in their professional life.
