How to Quit Your Job
Stepping foot into your bosses office and turning in your letter of resignation can lift a huge burden from your shoulder. And if you’re leaving your job to focus on your own business–you’ve probably imagined this moment in your head. But regardless of whether you don’t need a reference, or whether your boss was a complete jerk, there is a wrong and a right way to quit your job. The key is professionalism.
- Give a two-weeks notice: I know it’s an obvious tip. But in the business world, some employees don’t understand (or care) about the value of giving a two-weeks notice. Walking out on your job with little notice puts your employer in an awkward position. And you can probably say “goodbye” to a good reference. Remember, not every business is a success. And if you ever have to seek employment outside the home, a good reference from your previous employer comes in handy.
- Don’t Slack: So what if you only have one week until your last day. This doesn’t give you the right to slack on your assignments or develop a smart mouth with your boss. Stay professional. Show everyone in your office respect, arrive on time and complete projects by their due dates.
- Help locate a replacement: Finding good help is difficult, and it can take longer than two weeks to find your replacement. If you know someone who’s looking for employment (and they’re responsible and qualified), ask your boss to consider this person for the position. This alleviates the search for an employee, and the position remains filled. If you’re flexible, offer to stay until your boss finds a suitable replacement.
