Making Your Own Schedule - Rewarding or Disastrous?

Posted by Valencia on March 12th, 2009

I love the fact that I’m able to make my own schedule. For the most part, I wake up early in the mornings and try to finish my work by late morning. This allows me ample time to focus on other aspects of my life. I’ve had the same routine for awhile….and it works for me. But lately….I’ve been a little off schedule.

I used to be a stickler when it came to my schedule. Even though I didn’t have a boss telling me to complete assignments by a given time, I treated my business like a job, wherein I was the employee - no extended breaks, no radio, no television, etc. I am the master of self-discipline - or at least I used to be. And for the first time ever, I recognize the downside of having a flexible schedule.

Being able to make our own schedule and work mornings, nights or weekends is a primary reason why people choose to work for themselves. This is a rewarding aspect….as long as you know how to stick with a schedule. There’s always something to do, so it’s easy to put off work until tomorrow or the next day. And for some reason, when we don’t have a boss breathing down our backs, we tend to procrastinate and give into distractions. This has been my plight for the past couple of weeks. And as a whole, I haven’t accomplished nearly as much as I would have liked to.

I can’t recall the last time I had difficulty sticking with a schedule. Maybe I’m developing a more relaxed personality, or perhaps I’m subconsciously taking an overdue break. Whatever the reason, I need to pinpoint it and overcome it…fast.
