Do You Flake When the “Going Gets Tough?”

Posted by Valencia on February 9th, 2009

I have a confession….

I’m not proud of this (and I swear…it only happened once), but I’ve bailed on a project before. It was several years ago, and I had gotten “in over my head.” I’m all for new challenges, and I’ll occasionally step outside my comfort zone. But on this particular occasion, the assignment required more research than earlier anticipated, I wasn’t interested in the subject matter, and no matter how hard I tried to honor the commitment…it just wasn’t happening.

I’m not making excuses, nor do I suggest others follow my bad example. But if I can be completely honest…I don’t really regret the decision. I know that sounds bad…but it’s the truth. The decision to stop mid-way through the project wasn’t an easy one. It wasn’t like I woke up one morning and decided, “I’m going to do the most unprofessional thing I can.” It was a difficult choice, and I knew I would possibly lose the contract - which I did. Even so, I gave the project manager advance noticed, and I was paid for work completed up until that point.

So, why did I flake?

Aside from the above mentioned reasons, the client wasn’t a thrill to work with - which is why I don’t (and never will) regret the decision. The client wanted something for nothing -  I’ll never understand why the cheapest clients are generally the ones who want the world handed to them on a silver platter. In summary, the project monopolized my time and energy, and I couldn’t give my more lucrative assignments the attention they deserved. So, there’s my story…..I did it…..but it’ll never happen again.
