Do You Know How to “Wow” Your Customers?

Posted by Valencia on January 15th, 2009

Want to keep your current customers, or turn a one-time customer into a long-term client? Of course you do, everyone does. But with so many people leaving the corporate world and venturing out on their own, getting and retaining clients isn’t as easy as it used to be. Nowadays, freelancers and telecommuters have to stay on top of their game. We can’t afford bad days or slip ups. And keeping a client happy often involves going the extra mile .

So, I’d like to ask you, “what are you doing to “wow” your customers? What keeps them coming back? Is it the fact that you know how to respect deadlines, or perhaps you offer the best customer service? Then again, maybe you have a problem in this department. Attracting clients isn’t your problem - your main challenge in holding onto clients.

  • Be reliable: Everyone is busy. And if you work from home, you’re likely juggling multiple assignments, household chores, and family. But in all honesty, the client doesn’t care about your other projects. They don’t care if you have to wake up at the crack of dawn and work ten hours a day to complete everything. Their main concern is their project, and to stay on their good side, you’ve got to follow through on assignments and finish them within a reasonable time frame.
  • Be a problem solver: No project is perfect and obstacles will arise. Rather than run to the client for every mishap, learn how to be a problem solver. I don’t suggest presumptuousness or overstepping boundaries. But it doesn’t hurt to offer a few suggestions. This shows initiative, and the client will appreciate having someone like you on their side.
  • Be flexible: This isn’t my strongest attribute, but I’m working on it. Flexibility can take you a long way in this business. Clients can be fickle, moody, and all the above. And sometimes, it’s easier to say, “no more.” But you can’t walk away from everyone. Anticipate possible changes with every assignment and learn how to adapt.
  • Offer consultations: Some clients are extremely vocal and express every minor problem. Others are laid-back and don’t sweat the small stuff. But if you want to “wow” you customers, get their feedback and take their comments into consideration. Are they happy with the service? Where can you make improvements?
  • Be clear: What can the client expect from you? Be upfront from the beginning, and you’ll eliminate problems down the road. For instance, do you work weekends? Are you reachable on the weekends? How much work can you take on?
