5 Things You Should Never Say to a Client
As freelancers, we deal with some good clients and some bad clients. On one hand, we may feel tempted to bend over backwards for our loyal clients. And on the other hand, we may want to tell our difficult clients to take their projects and shove it where the sun doesn’t shine.
But whether you’re trying to secure additional assignments, or get through a difficult project with your sanity intact, there are five things you should never say to a client.
We Can Do Everything
Can you really? There’s nothing wrong with offering multiple services. Actually, this is a smart business move, and you’ll increase your clientele. But if you’re not familiar with a type of service or product, don’t offer it. Clients are paying good money, and they want someone with experience. This isn’t the time to try your hand at something new.
Sure, I’ll Lower My Price
You absolutely will not. Clients can be real cheapskates, and they often want something for nothing. Submit your quote or bid, and stick with your price.
That’s Not My Problem
I can’t tell you how many times this thought has ran through my head. But I hold my tongue and give a professional reply.
I Don’t Get Paid Enough For This
I don’t believe in burning bridges. That dreaded client may come in handy one day. Even more so, I don’t believe in slaving over projects that aren’t worth the pay, or dealing with clients who can’t make up their mind. Still, this thought is best left in your head. If it’s not working out between you and a client, complete the assignment you’re working on, and then go your separate ways.
I Really, Really Need This Assignment
It doesn’t matter whether the mortgage is late, car payment is due, or the credit cards are behind, never let potential clients see you sweat or smell your desperation. You might as well write “take advantage of me” across your forehead.
