Working When You Don’t Feel Like It?

Posted by Valencia on December 9th, 2008

Now that it’s getting colder and the days are shorter, I’m finding it difficult to stay motivated. This isn’t something new…I go through this every year. And I usually don’t snap out of my funk until late March or early April. Right now the only thing I’m motivated to do is grab a blanket, drink coffee, and watch movies. But, I can’t hibernate the winter. Life must go on; and working when we don’t feel like it…..that’s just the way it is sometimes.

Because I like to get my day started early, I normally complete my assignments in the morning and spend the afternoons brainstorming, working on personal projects, or taking care of other non-business matters. It’s a good schedule. But I’m thinking about switching it up a little.

My lack of motivation has risen to a new level, and I’m going to explore working in batches. Instead of sitting in one spot for hours and forcing greatness, I’m going to give my brain periodic mental breaks. Maybe I’ll work 30 minutes here…45 minutes there - and do other things in between. I don’t know if it’ll make a huge difference, but I’m willing to give it a try. I figure, working in intervals is a lot better than completely shutting down.

I am just getting into freelance writing. I really like your blogs here and would love to get your input on how to go about this. I have been writing since I was a child. I started with poetry, moved onto lyrics and am currently writing my first novel. I am hoping that having wlaready traveled the road that I am on you may be able and willing to offer invaluable tips that will hopefully help me bypass some of the inherent pitfalls. i look forward to hearing from you.

Thank you,

Tenea

Hi Tenea,
Thanks for stopping by! There are several ways to get started in freelance writing…but here’s what I did. I drafted about three or four good writing samples, created a short two-paragraph cover letter highlighting my niches, experience and education; and then I hit the online freelance writing job boards - hard. I write mostly for the web, but I have a few pieces published in print publications. These markets are harder to break into, but well worth the payout. If this is the route you want to go, grab a copy of Writer’s Market and start querying publications. The biggest mistake I made in my early online writing days was accepting low-paying assignments…but I quickly came to my senses. Hope this helps! :-)
