Looking to Retire Well? Better Start Now
When I decided to become a freelancer, the feedback I received wasn’t exactly positive. How will you pay for health insurance? You won’t qualify for loans? How do you plan to deal with retirement?
These were honest concerns. But, things worked out. I receive health insurance through my husband’s employer. I purchased my car on my own. And because my husband receives a W-2, we didn’t have a problem qualifying for a mortgage loan. But when it came to retirement planning - I put it off as long as I could.
I was inspire to write this post after reading Entrepreneur Retirement Planning at the Plugged in Business blog. I know the importance of planning for the future. And as a freelancer, I don’t have an employer to match a 401k contribution - I’m on my own.
I always said I wouldn’t worry about retirement until I turned 30. Don’t ask me why, it was a random number I pulled out of the sky. Well, I hit that magical number in early October. And since I’m now officially a “real adult,” I think it’s time for some real adult financial planning.
My knowledge is limited, but I think an IRA is the best way to go. I plan to explore all my options, and hopefully be ready to move forward by the end of the year.
