The “Work at Home” Bug

Posted by Valencia on November 10th, 2008

With the economy in a tailspin, more and more people are looking for ways to earn extra money. My husband is one of those persons. Actually, he’s looking for a way to do his own thing…completely.

We’re both entrepreneurs, and we’re always brainstorming business ideas. But at the end of the day, we think (or rather I think) it’s smart for at least one person in our household to maintain a steady job. I thought we were on the same page. But lately, he’s been doing a lot of “self-employment” talk. And honestly, it’s beginning to make me a little nervous.

I feel terrible. I’ve been self-employed for nearly seven years, and it’s been a great experience. So, why wouldn’t I want him to enjoy that?

It all comes down to fear.

I know that job security is a joke - three of my friends have been laid off in the past two months. So I realize that there are no guarantees. You can flip burgers at McDonald’s or be the CEO of a major corporation - pink slips do not discriminate. But at least with a job, you know what to expect. If my freelance business were to stop cold tomorrow, I have a measure of peace knowing that he has steady employment and (at least for the moment) a guaranteed paycheck. I don’t want to lose that.

Is that bad?
