False Sense of Reality

Posted by Valencia on November 4th, 2008

I get annoyed whenever someone makes the statement, “you’re at home during the day, you should have plenty of time to …….” I don’t want to imply that there’s some great divide between those who work at home and those who work outside the home. However, a number of commuters hold onto the belief that telecommuters spend their days watching television and running around the house in their pajamas.

Don’t get me wrong, I have my lazy days. But they are far-in between. And yes, I’m able to take breaks throughout the day and run errands. But that’s because I wake up and start my day early, which allows me to have free time in the afternoons.

I say all of this because my husband suggested that “some” telecommuters have a false sense of reality. In other words, because our schedules are “so” flexible, we forget that other people don’t enjoy the same freedom. Therefore, we shouldn’t get too upset if someone calls in the middle of the day and asks us to run an errand or help them with an emergency. This conversation started after he called and practically demanded I drop everything and bring his cell phone to his job - which I did, after a few sighs and groans.

Let me just say that I wouldn’t had mind if I hadn’t been in the middle of an assignment. When I get into my creative zone, I don’t like interruptions. And needless to say, once I switched gears, there was no going back. I don’t buy the whole “false sense of reality” idea. The way I see it - it doesn’t matter whether the desk is located in my home office or an employer’s office - work is work….period.
