Telecommuting Tips: Learn How to Sell Yourself

Posted by Valencia on October 1st, 2008

I don’t consider myself a salesperson. In fact, the extent of my sales experience involved working in the mall during my high school days.

Some people are natural salespeople. They know how to connect with others, and they aren’t afraid to open their mouths and be persuasive. They believe in the products they market. In turn, consumers trust these products. I think every freelancer, telecommuter, and independent contractor can learn a thing or two from experienced sell people.

I’m not an impulse shopper. But there have been times when a salesperson convinced me to buy a product. I can’t quite explain it, but somehow, they were able to get inside my head and convince me to see the value in a product or service. Coming from a person who doesn’t like to spend money…that takes skills.

I can definitely take a few pointers from salespeople. They aren’t afraid to put themselves out there. And it doesn’t matter how ridiculous or expensive a product is, they’ll do whatever it takes to get the sell. But what about us? Do we do whatever it takes to get a job or contract?

I have to admit, self-promotion isn’t my strongest ability. In the back of mind I don’t want to come off as overconfident or arrogant. Even when I know I’m the best person for a particular job, I don’t always project this in my cover letters. I sometimes hold back, and I know failure to sell myself has cost me a couple of good opportunities. But I’m trying to get better. I think the first step is recognizing that it’s okay to toot my own horn.

Others do it, so what am I afraid of?

You are afraid of being seen as an arrogant prick. Oh wait, that’s me. But then again I don’t really like talking about myself in general.

But there’s a difference between selling yourself and just rambling on about yourself when no one cares. Perhaps you are afraid that you might not know the difference?

Valencia, I used to feel that way, but seven years in advertising sales - a position I didn’t particularly like - did teach me a thing or two about selling/promotion. If you notice, when you have been convinced to buy something by a sales erson, they don’t come across as arrogant. They are helpful. They make you feel like they’re trying to help you, and that that their product/service is what you need for “X” reason.

I really believe in my service and what I can do for my clients, so I promote the benefits to my prospects. I dn’t think I’m arrogant. I don’t think I’m the absolute best writer on the web.I love to help people so that’s how I approach it. I hate selling. As long as I focus on helping these businesses by providing high quality content/copywriting services, my promotion efforts go much more smoothly.

@DJ: You bring up an excellent point. Likewise, I don’t like talking about myself. And because I’m easily annoyed by people who like to monopolize conversations by talking about themselves and their achievements, I try not to cross the line.

@Avid: You’re absolutely right. A good salesperson is very helpful. Focusing on how our services can benefit clients is an excellent way to approach the situation.
