7 Things to Do When Your Freelance Business is Slow

Posted by Valencia on September 9th, 2008

In a perfect world, no freelancer would have to deal with slow periods. Rather, they would maintain a steady flow of regular customers who 1.) always pay on time, 2.) respect their personal life, and 3.) offer generous compensation.

But we don’t live in a perfect world; and if you have few regular customers, you might encounter a slow period or two. Don’t worry, they’re usually short-lived. And in most cases, something bigger and better is right around the corner.

But in the meantime, here are a few ideas to keep yourself busy and productive.

1. Instead of spending your days sitting on the couch moping, actively look for new customers. People who work for themselves constantly promote their business…that’s how they minimize slow periods.

2. It’s a fact, freelancers often work longer hours. That’s because their business never sleeps. Slow periods can be a welcome mat. Take a few days off and mentally unwind. Sleep in, go on a vacation, or do absolutely nothing.

3. Re-organize your workspace and make it functional. Go through your file cabinets and get rid of old paperwork, shred old contracts and financial documents, and buy new supplies.

4. If you don’t have a workspace, create one. The space doesn’t have to be large. It can be a corner in your bedroom, family room, or living room. Set-up a small work desk, bring in a file-cabinet, and get to work.

5. Call or e-mail old clients. Send a courtesy letter and keep your name fresh in their minds. Find a handful of repeat customers and you’ll have reliable income every month.

6. Clean your house. Take advantage of shorter workdays and focus on your home. Does your place need a good spring cleaning? Do you need to tidy the backyard?

7. Take pleasure in personal hobbies. Running a home business can zap your time and energy, in which you can’t fit personal interests into your schedule. Read a good book, workout, volunteer, etc.
