Can You Find Good Telecommute Jobs on Craigslist?

Posted by Valencia on August 15th, 2008

jobs.jpgI’ve found several good freelance opportunities on Craigslist, so I can’t help but be a big fan of the website. However, if you were to talk with other freelancers or telecommuters, they might feel differently.

Since I began using this website to look for opportunities, I’ve come across some negative comments. A few people feel the “gigs” section of the website is a complete waste of time and a haven for low paying opportunities. And because a large number of people are looking to break into “work at home life,” several good opportunities are flagged in an attempt to decrease the competition.

Yes, there are many low paying opportunities on the website. And yes, the competition is fierce and I usually have to start my search early in the day and check the website throughout the day for new postings. But overall, I’ve found more than a few great - and fun - paying opportunities on Craigslist.

I’m satisfied with my current work load, but I like to check the website once or twice a week to see what’s out there. Just yesterday, a quick search for telecommute jobs offered available opportunities for a Technical Project Manager, Reference Librarian, Customer Service Reps, Graphic Designers, and Translators.

There are without a doubt plenty of great telecommuting jobs on Craigslist. The key is knowing when to look, and what to look for.

1. Search for Jobs Throughout the Day: Companies and individuals post telecommute jobs throughout the day. If you’re serious about telecommuting, I recommend checking the website at least twice a day.

2. Don’t Pay for a Telecommute Job: Unless it’s a business opportunity, never pay a firm or employment agency for work. Granted, some companies run background and credit checks on applicants, in which you’re required to pay a fee. This is different, and perfectly okay. On the other hand, paying a fee to access a work at home or telecommute database is chancy.

3. Stay Away from Low-Paying Telecommute Jobs: Often times, telecommuters work a full eight-hour day. Thus, it only makes sense to make a full-time salary. Because you choose to work from home, some people will take advantage of you and offer a ridiculous salary. These companies and individuals target persons who are desperate to make money.
