Want to Work from Home? Simplify Your Life

Posted by Valencia on July 31st, 2008

I know several work at home professionals and telecommuters who earn more money working at home. But this wasn’t always the case.

Leaving the workplace is scary and exciting. On one hand, you’re able to enjoy all the freedoms in the world. On the other hand, it takes time to grow a home-based business. You’ll need to find contracts, and it can take months to find steady work. Consequently, you may have to deal with a pay cut.

Persons who work at home often save money in other areas, in which a pay cut doesn’t impact their finances. But for those who regularly indulge in a few extravagances, a salary decrease can rock their world.

Everyone should spoil themselves, and I definitely believe in paying yourself first. But if you’re trying to quit your job and work from home, you might cut back on the $4 latte, or re-think the $100 monthly facials - at least until your business turns a profit.

Here are a few tips on how you can simplify and save.

1. Do-it-yourself: We can easily spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on unnecessary services. You may have a lawn service, pest service, maid service, car wash guy, etc. These services are perfect for people with little time. But if you want to work from home, you may have to let go of a few conveniences. Wash your own car, clean your own house, and buy a $4 bottle of bug spray.

2. Drive less: Now that gas prices have exceeded $4/gallon, everyone’s looking for ways to save at the tank. There was a time when I could fill my tank for $20. In those days, I would hop in my car, drive around town, and didn’t give it a second thought. Nowadays, I drive when necessary…period. Likewise, if you need to simplify and save until your business grows, drive less. You’ll fill up fewer times throughout the month and save plenty of cash.

3. Plan a vacation…at home: Everyone needs a break, and you’ll likely want to enjoy a little family time before the kids head back to school. Rather than spend a lot of money on expensive vacations or getaways - in which you’ll need to pay for air fare, hotel room, meals, and a rental car - discover how to vacation in your own backyard. Make plans to visit local attractions - beaches, parks, museums, and amusement parks.

4. Shop less: The less time you spend inside the mall, the more money you save. One of the easiest (and obvious) ways to simplify and save is to stop unnecessary shopping. Some people get a kick out of buying new outfits every season. They spend hundreds of dollars, and only wear the outfits a few times. In my opinion, this is a huge waste of money and time. Stop trying to keep up with everybody else. And if you can’t deny yourself, look for specials and deals.
