You need customers to make money as a freelancer. Unfortunately, clients don’t just fall into our laps, which mean we have to actively look for business. Even if you don’t have much experience in the areas of marketing and promoting, there are several inexpensive ways to promote a freelance business. In some cases, you don’t have to leave the house.

Advertise on the Internet: You have to get your business name and product in the public’s eye. Start online and place free classified ads. Since the Internet is flooded with free classified websites, you’ll need to place several daily ads. If you don’t have this kind of time, look into websites that automatically renew ads every hour or once a day.

Publish a Press Release: Freelancers often overlook this valuable marketing tool. If you’re starting a new business and looking for new customers, announce your service or business with a press release. Writing a release is simple, and you don’t need a professional. Provide essential information about your business: who? what? when? where? how? Submit the release to your local newspapers.

Cold Call: I get annoyed whenever a telemarketer calls my home; therefore, I’m not a big fan of cold calling. Yet, many freelancers have had success. Grab the local phone book and look for businesses that may benefit from your services. Contact the company and introduce yourself as a freelancer. Ask to speak with the hiring manager or leave a detailed message. If you’re really brave, visit the company in-person and leave a business card, resume, and informational flyer.

Get a Website: Build a professional website or blog. Gain website traffic and potential business with article directories and search engine optimized content.

Carry a Stack of Business Cards: You never know who you’ll run into. With this said, alway be prepared. If you come across someone who needs your services, don’t be shy. Hand them a business card and get their contact information.

Attend Community Business Meetings: Want to meet other professionals? Join a local business group and attend weekly or monthly meetings. Be professional, smile, introduce yourself, and don’t forget the business cards.
